Choosing the Better Part

Luke 10:41-42

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

We can all relate to Martha. Our minds are consumed with endless thoughts, and our to-do lists seem to grow by the minute. The demands of life can feel daunting and overwhelming. No matter how hard we try, there never seem to be enough hours in the day to get everything done. With so many daily tasks looming over us, we rise early and go to bed late, leaving us exhausted and struggling to spend quality time with the Lord.

In this passage, Martha was doing something honorable—preparing a meal for Jesus and His disciples. Yet, Mary recognized Jesus as the Bread of Life and positioned herself at His feet to be fed by His words. Jesus emphasizes in this scripture that only one thing is truly needed: prioritizing His presence.

We must intentionally choose and desire intimacy with the Lord. When we set aside what seems urgent and run into His presence, we will find that our worries and anxieties begin to fade. Being with the Lord is the better part.

Before you start your day, seek the Lord first. Don’t be distracted by the demands of your to-do list or the racing thoughts that try to pull you away. God will show you how to manage and balance your day. Let this week be the beginning of putting Him first.
